Why Financial Assets Matter More Than Ever
In the UAE, we understand real estate exceptionally well. For many investors, property has created substantial wealth and should continue to remain part of the portfolio.
But being asset-rich and being financially flexible are two different things.
A property worth AED 3 million is valuable, but if you suddenly need AED 500,000, you cannot sell the kitchen.
That is where financial assets become important.
Liquidity Is an Asset Too
Equities, bonds, ETFs and funds give investors something physical assets often cannot: liquidity, flexibility and global diversification. This is particularly relevant in the UAE, where an investor's income, business, home and investment properties can all be linked to the same economy.
Adding exposure to the US, Europe, GCC and other global markets means your wealth is participating in different businesses, sectors, currencies and economic cycles.
And history makes a strong case for doing so.
The UBS Global Investment Returns Yearbook 2026, covering more than 125 years of market history, found equities to be the best-performing liquid asset over the long term. As of September 2026, the S&P 500 Total Return Index had delivered approximately 15.5% annualised over the previous 10 years, while the S&P GCC Composite Total Return Index delivered approximately 9.0% annualised.
That doesn't mean equities will deliver those returns going forward. It does show what long-term ownership of productive businesses has historically been capable of.
Bonds Are Back in the Conversation. Financial assets are not only about equities.
With US Treasury yields around 4% to above 5% across different maturities at the end of September 2026, bonds can once again play a meaningful role in generating income and balancing portfolio risk.
So the question should not be:
“Which investment gives me the highest return?”
It should be:
“What does my money need to do for me?”
Block the Noise
This is also where qualified financial advice matters.
Investors today are surrounded by promises of high fixed returns, leveraged trading, F&O strategies, the next multibagger and countless ways to make money quickly.
Access to investments is no longer difficult. Knowing what to ignore is.
Companies such as Apple, Amazon and NVIDIA required exceptional people to build them. But investors don't need to be geniuses to benefit from great businesses.
They need discipline.
They need the patience to keep investing, the intelligence to diversify, and the restraint not to turn investing into gambling every time markets become exciting.
Equities can provide long-term growth.
Bonds can provide income and diversification.
Cash provides liquidity.
The objective isn't to own the most assets. It is to own assets that give you the most choices. Because ultimately, financial independence isn't just about how wealthy you look on paper.
It is about how much freedom your wealth actually gives you.
